Lorelei, the Nixie
No one Remembers Along the Rhine
BY REBECCA TILLETT
No one remembers who broke her heart but they remember who drowned. No one remembers the song but they remember the sound.
No one knows the despair, or the heart that keeps breaking; only the beauty on the rocks. They know her long flowing hair, the promise that she’s taking; their creaking oarlocks.
No one remembers along the Rhine. No one knows her name. Just another wreckage along the shoreline with nothing but a ghost to blame.
Perched upon a rocky cliff above Germany's Rhine River, Lorelei is said to have sung with such beauty that passing sailors became entranced and steered their boats to destruction. Whether viewed as a siren, a spirit, or a tragic woman transformed by heartbreak, her legend remains one of Europe's most enduring tales of beauty and doom.
